To Atheists and Agnostics

Examining the evidence for Jesus — reason, history, and the claims of Christ.

Greeting

Dear friends,

We write with respect for your commitment to reason, evidence, and intellectual honesty. These are not enemies of faith but its companions. The Bible itself invites examination and reasoning:

"Come now, let us reason together," says the Lord.
— Isaiah 1 :18

Our aim is not to impose belief but to explore truth together — truth that stands the test of evidence, logic, and conscience. Whether you identify as atheist, convinced there is no God, or agnostic, open but uncertain, we invite you to look honestly at the person and claims of Jesus of Nazareth.

The question is not small. If Jesus truly lived, died, and rose again, then He is unlike any other figure in history. If not, then Christianity is false. As the apostle Paul wrote:

"If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith."
— 1 Corinthians 15 :14

Let us reason together about this claim — not with emotion, but with evidence.

Historical Evidence

Jesus of Nazareth is one of the best-attested figures of the ancient world. Multiple independent sources — Roman, Jewish, and Christian — testify to His life and execution under Pontius Pilate. The Gospels themselves are written as eyewitness records, not myths. Luke, a historian and physician, begins his account this way:

"Since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning… it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account… so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught."
— Luke 1 :3–4

Even critical historians agree that Jesus was crucified, that His tomb was found empty, and that His followers were suddenly convinced He had risen. The question is how best to explain those facts.

The earliest Christians did not preach vague spirituality. They proclaimed concrete events witnessed by many:

"He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once… most of whom are still alive."
— 1 Corinthians 15 :6

Reason & Faith

Faith in Scripture is not blind belief; it is trust built on truth. The same God who gave us minds to reason also calls us to use them:

"Always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and respect."
— 1 Peter 3 :15

True faith does not fear evidence. It welcomes honest questions. Jesus Himself invited testing:

"If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God."
— John 7 :17

Reason and revelation are not rivals. The heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19 :1); conscience testifies within each heart (Romans 2 :14–16); and the historical record bears witness that something extraordinary happened in first-century Judea. The Christian claim is not that faith replaces reason, but that faith completes it — leading reason beyond its limits to the truth of the living God.

The Resurrection Claim

Everything in Christianity stands or falls on the resurrection. If Jesus did not rise, His message collapses. But if He did, then God has acted in history and confirmed His Son.

The early Christians were not gullible or naive. They were skeptics who became witnesses. Thomas demanded physical proof, and Jesus gave it (John 20 :24–29). Peter and others died rather than deny what they had seen.

"[God] has given assurance to all by raising Him from the dead."
— Acts 17 :31

No one expected it — not the disciples, not the Jewish leaders, not the Romans. Yet from fear came boldness, and from despair came joy. How do we explain that sudden transformation? As one historian put it: "The best explanation for the origin of Christianity is the resurrection itself."

Common Objections (Briefly)

1) "Science explains the world; God is unnecessary."

Science describes how the world works, but not why it exists, or why it obeys laws at all. Scripture says, "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made." (Psalm 33 :6) The order of nature points not to randomness but to a rational Mind behind it.

2) "If God exists, why is there evil and suffering?"

The Bible faces evil directly. It says the world is broken by human rebellion, yet God entered that suffering through His Son.

"He was pierced for our transgressions… and by His wounds we are healed."
— Isaiah 53 :5

The cross shows that God is not distant from pain; His Son died — He bore it Himself.

3) "If God wants us to believe, why doesn't He make Himself obvious?"

God has revealed Himself in creation, in conscience, and finally in Christ. He does not force faith; He invites it. "He is not far from any one of us." (Acts 17 :27) God can be found by those who sincerely seek Him (Jeremiah 29 :13; Matthew 7 :7).

Invitation

Dear friend, if truth matters — follow it wherever it leads. The Christian message begins not with fear, but with love:

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
— John 3 :16

If this is true, then your life is not an accident, your mind is not meaningless, and your longing for truth points to the God who made you.

  1. Read one Gospel (Mark or Luke) as history. Ask: Who is this man? What evidence is there?
  2. Ask God the Father, if He is real, to show you the truth. "If you seek Me with all your heart, you will find Me." — Jeremiah 29 :13
  3. Examine the resurrection honestly. If it happened, it changes everything.

God does not ask for blind belief. He calls for honest seeking. He promises that those who seek will find, those who ask will receive, and those who knock will find the door opened (Matthew 7 :7–8).

Closing Thought

The good news is simple: The Father sent His Son to reconcile the world to Himself. Jesus lived without sin, died for sinners, and rose to give life to all who believe.

"Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life."
— John 5 :24

We worship the Father, trust His Son, and are led by His Spirit. Our invitation is not to religion, but to reality — to truth, love, and life itself.
